Sometimes people do it illegally. However, some communes arrange for someone to come by and pick up large trash (old furniture and the like and it has to be on the street) - you should contact your Mairie.

 

Some towns have (or used to have) a specially announced "encombrants" pick up. Basically, it's where they'll pick up anything too large or bulky for the regular trash bins - but there are limits even to the encombrant pick-up. However, I know our town dropped the pick-up. There is supposed to be a thing where you can call to have bulky trash items picked up. It's not free however - there's a flat charge IIRC.

Like EH says, contact your local mairie and find out if they do the encombrant any more. They may be able to tell you how to schedule a special pick up if you have stuff you need to dispose of.

Since you're in Paris, you can go online here: https://teleservices.paris.fr/sira/jsp/site/Portal.jsp?page=formengine&form=ramen You basically tell them what it is and when you want it picked up and then you put it outside with the number they give you and they'll take care of it.
