Living up here in the campo I have a real tick problem every Spring.. Despite everything my dogs are still picking up ticks-- despite scalibor collars- frontline etc.My land has been sprayed--so no weeds or grass around.I think the cats are bringing them in on them. I do dread ticks landing up on me for obvious reasons--so now I'm spraying the dogswith Supona-- awful organo phosphate stuff- but works.Does anyone else have any experience of using Supona on dogs please?

What are you using on your animals? Dogs and cats??

WHAT ARE YOU USING ON YOUR ANIMALS? DOGS AND CATS??

I read this a while ago and I am hoping that you have now tried this remedy on yourself and NOT on your animals!

I am astounded at the question quite honestly.

Why didn't you ask you vet? If you are unsure what to do with ticks, please just ask your VET, he will be pleased to help you.

Were you REALLY serious when you wrote this?

I googled supona y perros on spanish google

there's a picture on the box - you don't need to be able to read Spanish to understand it

Supona - Antiparasitário Externo mascota, precios

that is just one of many many links

so it seems in Spain that it is..........

I too live in the Campo and whilst I wouldn't want to live in the town or village I have to admit the ticks are a nightmare I could live without. I treat my dogs with Advantix but to be honest there is no substitute for tick checks, in fact my dogs now all line up for mum to check them over much to the amusement of my neighbours. However, having heard of a woman in a nearby village being diagnosed with Lymes Disease caught from a tick bite I don't care. Ticks beware.

Rather than some sort of unnecessary discussion here I still think that the person should ask her vet about what is allowed to be used on her animals. People, as well as animals can be allergic for many products these days. A forum is NOT the place to ask what one should use on an animal or human. Go to the vet or even ring the nurses/ admins are all on the ball and will help in advvising you ass to what is best for your animal.

Our neighbour warned us about the prevalence of ticks here. In El Campo as well. Our pup is a month too young for Scalibor but the vet has been good. Advantix and inspections are a must.

I have to say, like an idiot, I cut the grass wearing shorts today. The mower was broken and the grass was about 15cm long - so I am now going to have to conduct my own tick inspection!

Not wishing to get too personal but they seem to like gentleman's nether regions to latch on, best warn your wife what you are at, otherwise she might get a fright walking into the bedroom to see you peering at yourself in the mirror.

My Dobe pup is 5 months old, my vet informed me I could use Advantix on him with no problems, otherwise Frontline is fine. However, if in doubt, ask your vet.

Sorry only just got back to my thread!!
So sorry to have upset Smokey Beagle--but really I'm not so silly as I might seem! I live in a heavily tick infected area-- my dogs have scalibor collars and I use Advantix too. However at this time of year they pick up ticks--I check them all over twice a day at least.Quite often the cats bring ticks in too.I asked my vet for his advice-and he said to use Supona if necessary--but that it was up to me if I used it or not.I wondered if anyone else was using it--certainly I know other folk who have.I hate the thought-but in light of the really seroius diseases that ticks can give dogs I wondered what other people were doing? Is Supona the lesser of the evils.

I got a tick remover from the vets in the UK. Small & large ,made of plastic & shaped like a hook. You just use the one determined by the size of tick, slip it under where it's attached & rotate anti-clockwise & it's off complete with suckers. When I showed it to our vet here ,he'd never seen one even though the info's in spanish as well. The second one I bought ( UK again ! ) has the makers name on this time & is called an O´Tom , French made, info here. The O'TOM / TICK TWISTER® to remove ticks: buy the O'TOM / TICK TWISTER® online directly from us They're 5€'s on here post free. Change language to spanish for euro price.
They're so easy to use & I've never had one not come out complete.

There is a natural alternative for killing ticks, it is called Neem Oil, (apologise if I have already posted this), it can be used to kill ticks, fleas, mites etc. It is also good for killing bugs that eat / lay their eggs etc on your plants. It is available on the internet and whilst not cheap it is totally natural, so for those of you out there who are worried about using chemicals perhaps you should consider it.
By the way, you can use it on humans too. Although it has a distinct odour that some might find unpleasant, take your pick, ticks or strong smelling tick repellant.

With regards the O'Tom tick picker, they are brilliant, far exceeding picking the horrid little things off with your fingers. They are available through Amazon and Ebay and range in price from 1.99 (sterling) to a whole lot more money.

The ticks are at an all time high up here, my neighbours tell me they have never known it to be so bad, I have to agree, the other day my son came in from walking the dogs and his trousers were covered as were the dogs.

Supona

Well I used the Supona as instructed by my vet to get rid of fleas etc, NO GOOD! I awoke this morning to find that my boxer was still riddled with them, in fact worse than yesterday, poor thing. The Pastor dog seems a little happier though so I guess it may have worked on him - he certainly looks cleaner for once.

I think I am going back to my frontline and Advantix methods, although not fantastic it seems to work a little better for a little longer.

I don't remember the ticks ever being bothered about the heat, they only seem to disappear through the winter months - some reprieve for the animals at least.
