Sicily and Frosinone/Latina... the annual call out!

Hi all,

For those who know me I have been putting out an annual call for British/American Expats specifically in the Palermo region who would like to meet up and share war stories but this year is a little different.

We opened a small shop in our town Altavilla Milicia which is effectively a bra fitting studio. My wife qualified this year having taken a course and we were super excited but then the usual calls of doom and gloom from local Sicilians appeared and worse actually came to fruition by the vast majority of locals saying we are too expensive and it isn't what they would want. This is fine it is what it is we have had a steady stream of customers from outside travel to find us and they have been incredibly satisfied which is good.

We are however reconsidering our position in Altavilla. While the small town Sicilian charm has been nice for the last 10 years we are at a point where we still even now feel like outsiders and quite frankly if we are going to feel like that we would rather be in a bigger city/town with more to do. We would also like better options of schooling for our kids (8 and 6) and we feel that given local attitudes to our attempt to contribute to the local community maybe now is the time to make some life decisions.

So with the above in mind is there anyone in the Frosinone, Latina area (or in fact any towns with population from 40000 to say 300000) that would like to give any insight into the differences about living in a small town compared to a big town/city. Any recommendations? We are looking at Frosinone as we have passed by twice and enjoyed our days out there but this was while looking through rose tinted glasses if I am being honest as our frustrations with Sicily are now quite deep routed.

Any and all advice, comments and insights welcome as always :)

40k+ is basically the whole province of Rome outside of Rome. Almost all the towns. Hopefully that makes sense.

Small towns to a certain extent you'll always be the new guy. Odds are most everybody in any smallish town grew up together . Went to school together. Maybe related.

Bigger towns people move around more. May work in different towns. You'll have more doctors to pick from. Obviously more shops etc.

I'm not sure exactly what you're looking for. The area south of Rome is basically one large urban area.

Do you want someplace that's car oriented? Or do you want more access to trains? Do you want beach?

So we are pretty much interested between Bologna and Frosinone on the West. We have not explored the east at all. We do like travelling and being on the mainland I think we would be travelling more for days out etc so would rather be close to the motorways where possible. Wouldn't want to be out in the sticks so to speak. The beach we would want it to be reachable but not necessarily live on it. Maybe max an hour drive.

I think we definitely want a more modern thinking town/city.

Truth is we are not entirely sure or set on what we want but very happy to hear considerations from others about their experiences/cities.
