Riding A 125 In Spain ?

My missus wants to start riding again here in Lanzarote, and wants to take her test in UK next year when family problems sort themselves out. So want to buy her a 125 here.

She has a full car license and in UK she could ride a 125 on that, but I've heard various tales of the law in Spain.

A pal's daughter bought a 125 a few months ago, and as she was a resident, she thought she HAD to get a Spanish licence.

And also been advised by an insurance lady, that my missus can drive a 125 on a car licence. But didn't ask what country it was from.

I am resident so can but the 125 for her, but she needs to keep her UK license for the sake of her elderly parents in UK

All help and advice appreciated :fingerscrossed:

If you are resident here then, in all probability, so is she (certificate or not). If that's the case, she can NOT take a test in the UK - it must be taken in her country of residence. Even if she did, that would be a UK licence which would NOT allow her to ride a 125cc bike here in Spain.

In that case, she'll need to take a bike licence here when she moves here & becomes resident, or switch her full UK issued licence for a Spanish one - again, when she becomes resident here.

btw - you don't have to be resident to BUY a vehicle.

I'm pretty sure if she takes the full UK bike test she'll be able to ride any size bike in Spain even as a Non-Resident (I do). Why don't you try a bike hire company and see what they say about riding a 125cc on a UK car license in Spain.

What Motorbike can I ride on my car licence?

Car driving test passed on or after 1 February 2001

After completing CBT you will be able to ride a moped or motorcycle with L plates – up to 125cc (11kW max).
If you want to remove the L plates or ride a more powerful machine you will need to take the relevant practical tests.
Before taking your full bike licence tests, you will need to take a motorcycle theory and hazard perception test.

Car driving test passed before 1 February 2001

You can ride a moped (max 50cc) without L plates.
If you want to ride a motorcycle over 50cc and up to 125cc you will need to take CBT.
Once you have a valid CBT certificate you can ride a 125cc with L plates.
If you want to remove the L plates or ride a more powerful machine you will need to take the relevant practical tests.
