Can someone tell me is it worth waiting until I travel to Dubai before buying an iPhone4? Similarly, I expected Dubai to be much cheaper for laptops and PCs. Is that true?

Actually depends on the specs. Anything related to Apple Definite NO NO NO as for other stuff depends on what youre looking for. GITEX the IT fair due soon boasts quite a lot of deals but then again a market for older models ex stock etc.

Not sure about Iphones but generally things are more expensive in the UK.

General points though that may help

Apple laptops are MUCH cheaper here than the UK if you go to Computer plaza, easily saving a hundred quid or more on Macbook Pro's etc. (note you won't get arabic keyboards which will be more expensive and available in the malls etc.)

Things like LCD tv's (samsung) etc are all significantly cheaper than the UK if you get them during shopping festival.

In these cases they beat even online prices.

generally though most things are dearer.

Ya as with most shopping one should do a little research

I'll give you an example

Macbook Pro 13 inch is only 4600 at Comp. Plaza, which is a great price and close to the American one.

Samsung 4 series 32 inch telly was 1300 at the last shopping festival, which is cheaper than even Amazon in the UK.

When the exchange rate was around 6 it was even cheaper.

Anyway, that's just examples.

My Nespresso machine was 150 in the UK, got it on sale from John Lewis for 100, with 30 quid rebate (net price 70)

Here the same machine is 1500 AED!! Needless to say I packed it with me and brought it down :)

One just has to be careful, but there are still deals to be had

The retail industry in Dubai is extremely Promotion Focussed and companies here dont mind taking a hit on the promotional products so its best to keep a look out for that.

As for electronics margins are slim and competition tough..its a good market to LCD Tv's etc. but frankly as I think most have already mentioned anything decently good unique or then new and latest in the market the retailers here overcharge like hell because clientel have alot of buying power and dont mind dishing extra for being the first ones to get something.

But yes always good to check if your warranty will be covered in Dubai if it is a high ticket purchase youre bringing back with you.
