A sad day today for many Brits and Anglophiles. The popular UK torrent site with a name related to the stars has been closed by the Internet Polis. Now makes getting my UK tv fix that bit more difficult and getting the more obscure programs even harder :(

I use a nettop for media, so it is pretty much on all the time and leaves my laptop free for all the other stuff. I can recommend the Lenovo ones with the remote control and without integrated graphics.

That was the thing I loved about the site. I was always coming across documentaries that I didn't know about, but was interested in. On many of the other sites you pretty much have to know what you're looking for to start with.

I'm hoping they change the domain from a .com and move to a server abroad.

I'm avoiding mentioning names just to be safe. The UK one I'm hoping will reopen elsewhere. There is a good community behind it and I can't see them just disappearing off.

The majority of my tv viewing is off this site, so it looks like the Kindle is going to get used more.

I've tried to download programs on to my Kindle Fire through Amazon but it keeps saying that it's not available for my geographic location.

I prefer documentaries too and recently found out that I can watch CBS 48 Hours Mystery online through their website. That's kept me hooked for the last few days, got a lot of catching up to do!

Do you all know of other broadcasting websites where we can watch their programs legally online?

The UK one had a strict policy of not allowing content that was commercially available. So, if you could buy a DVD etc they didn't have it. It had a lot of content that is simply not available anywhere, even with a credit card. They even had daily news/politics type shows.

I understand copyright holders wishing to protect their 'investment', but if it isn't commercially available, then it isn't hurting their bank balance. The site being discussed doesn't have advertising, so they don't commercially gain either.

It is about time the copyright laws reflected the modern world. The whole region thing is part of the reason behind people downloading. It made sense when there was only physical products, but now things are digital, it is only greed driving the whole region thing.

Watch FRONTLINE Online | PBS

The URL above is for FRONTLINE (the best documentary/investigative journalism US focus IMHO). If you look around the site(PBS is the parent company), you will find links for all their other work (fronline world for the world, and cultural/social etc.. stuff). You will end up spending hours and hours on their site as I have lol...

There is also 60 mins, but the CBS site only has snippets of the program and not the whole 45 min long show all together. You can watch it an interview/piece at a time, but that's a bit of a hassle.

You should look into using newsgroups instead now rather than torrents. Much safer. There are tons of good indexing sites and newsgroup browsers. Some newsgroup servers cost to subscribe to, some don't.

Not exactly sure how much I can say on here, so the little the better until I'm told different. You definitely don't need a VPN though. :)

Torrent sites and their availability will continue to diminish in the UK and US and start moving over to "other" countries where it will be risky to say the least. Hence a growing number of users crawling into deep net p2p.

I for one use Retro Share - but you need an invite from a sharer in order to get anything. It's also encrypted so no one knows what the content is.

Agreed. I use newsgroups and they are miles in front of all that dirty p2p crap.

Plus it's all stored on servers so it's how fast your connection can pull it down, not the speed that x amount of other users will let you take it from their machine.

Documentaries galore too.

As for VPNs, they are a good idea and I always use it. Not only does it make your PC appear to be in the location of the VPN (so Pam, this would work for you) but it also stops your bandwidth being throttled by your ISP for downloading too much (they can't tell which IP address is using the bandwidth or summat).
