If you are a true beginner, you can find everything you need for free online. Duolingo, mentioned above, is a fantastic resource and completely free. I'm using for German and it's highly effective. I suggest completing the French Duolingo course and buy a cheap grammar book as that will bring you past beginner level. You can then enrol in an A2-level French course and you'll get much more out of it (A2 is the next level up from beginners according to the European language framework).

In my opinion it is a waste of money to pay for a beginners' language course.

I think it really depends on the individual learner. The approach that you've outlined seems to work well for you, but that does not mean that it would work as well for a different kind of learner. For example, I do best in a structured environment (usually a classroom) with a good instructor, a good text/materials, and accountability. Speaking from the standpoint of my experience with CELTA/TEFL, teaching a beginner's class is more challenging than higher levels. Also, immersion is the way to go IMHO.

I'm looking for a year long immersion course starting in Sept. '16 to take me from B1 level French to B2/C1 so I e-mailed about 30 different universities and received around 10 promising leads. I prefer to live in a larger city, so my main choices are U of Strasbourg, U of Lille 3, and U of Lyon 2. I can't speak to the quality of instruction, but they seem to be reasonably priced at around 1200-1800 Euros per semester for 200-250 hours of instruction.

If you are interested in going this route I could provide you with some links.
