Hi,

Anyone living in 86, 87, or 16? Please can you provide a quick summary of what your weather experience has been over the past few years.

When I last visited the area some years ago I recall hot summers (25 - 30) and dry and tales of winter barely reaching down to 0C. Looking at a couple of climate sites it seems they think it is cooler than that, barely reaching 25 in summer and some frosts in winter.

I'd appreciate some personal experience data

Thanks

The catch is the effects of climate change, meaning frequent unusual weather events and, would you believe, local climates that are changing. Weather experienced in the past few years is likely not a good indicator of future weather and I suspect the concept of local climate is a thing of the past. By all means look at DejW's link to Météo France, the site is very informative, but just bear in mind that the historical data is just that.

That said, apart from sudden blast of freezing weather, overall temperatures are on the rise.

All true, but micro climates will still exist even if more extreme. My time in Southern California was an education in micro-climates - 30F temperature swing in 15 miles!

I agree with EH, I don't know whether giving a summary of recent weather conditions will be helpful to you. The climate seems to be changing quite rapidly.

The last 3 years here in Haute Vienne (87) have been very dry with hot summers (many days reaching 30-35°C). Recent winters have been mild with very little snow/frost. This winter has been particularly unusual with temperatures in the twenties for quite a few days in February (and March). And we had our first rain in weeks this morning.

Weather is definitely NOT irrelevant - would I prefer to live in Pas de Calais or Provence given that I could find a suitable commune and property in either? Easy answer, warmer is better. And those twp places are more than a couple of degrees different - more like 10 degrees or even more

I have just watched TF1 metro (like I have done for the last 22 years) and it going to be lovely, sunny and hot everywhere this weekend.

I am helping you.

Forget the weather. It is the same everywhere these days. Hot summer cold winter.

There are only three places I would live in France. Weather is not a deciding factor in my choice because the weather will be the same whever I choose.

Reporting in from 86....compared to what I was used to back in the US on the mid-atlantic coast, the weather here is mild to me. It might get down to freezing in the winter a few times (especially overnight), but not too bad. The past summer was almost unbearable, though, but I also live in the roof apartment with the sun beating/radiating down through the roof windows. It was bad though. At least up to 35 degrees in my apartment for what seemed like an eternity (maybe a couple of weeks)? So if you can invest in an A/C, go for it. I don't mind the heat in small doses, actually I prefer the heat-- but not when I'm trapped in a sauna baking like a baked potato.

Two winters ago, there was a random period of a few days below freezing and some ice. But not so much this year. I feel like it's just a pretty even-keeled, temperate kinda climate.

Thank you , that is helpful and backs up what my research is telling me. 35C is 95F and I'm quite used to that for a month or two in the summer having lived in Southern California for 20 years - but we did have A/C. The conditions I don't like are high humidity in summer (can't stand deep south USA) or the constant damp we get in England in the winter.

Thanks again

It is not bickering.

Clearly the OP needs some help.

How many threads have I/we read about people trying to choose a location in France because of the weather ???

That is not the way to do it. It will end in tears.

BTW there is no difference in weather patterns between 86, 87, 16 or even 75.;)

Smeg, your opinions in this area are well known and clearly stated. You're never going to convince folks to change their minds (nor to admit it if by some odd chance they actually do change their minds). Let's just give it a rest.

Offer your opinion and then sit back and let the OP do with it as they please.

You could try a site like Weather Underground, where the weather data is provided by lots of individuals with reporting weather stations set up. Pick a couple of "representative" towns in the areas you're considering, and when you look at the data from any individual station, there is a listing of another 15 or 20 stations in the area. It would at least give you an idea of how much of a micro climate there is.

The only thing is that it's all current data and forecasts. As far as I can tell, they don't keep any historical data (at least not when you rely on the freebie version, as I do).

Still, it might give you some additional insight into the areas you are considering.

Thanks Bev, I'll check that out, current conditions are useful (as any qualified sailor can tell you). Smeg is right, I do need help - in checking the weather in my chosen area - I'm not trying to choose an area based on weather, rather possibly eliminate one. However, he isn't offering help, just his opinion and we all know what opinions are like ;-)
