Emotionally I don't like this long-shot idea because it gets in the way of my "Seeing the World" motto, so to speak hehe
But if career-wise is this perhaps mere foolish thinking?

During a recent appraisal my boss says that he will fully support me to pick up project management - exams, OTJ and all. This being one of the rivals of the likes of HP does have tonnes of projects to manage day in and out.
If I stay - but I do really, really want to leave already - for another two years to earn my chops (as in a major career switch) will I fetch a good price Down Under? Perhaps two years is considered super junior PM anyway?

Any project managers here? Or just tell me what you think?

Hello Riversandlakes,

from a different career but in the same context, I am an electrical engineer and working as a technical director in a manufacturing company, I already started my MBA which takes about 2 years, while having my immigration process running in parallel, planning to make a landing when I get the Visa then come back after I finish the MBA as a career switch from technical to planning/management.

Just a thought :)

Regards,

M. Omar,

Hi RNL:

2 yrs in PM role is fine BUT it depends on what you're PMing. If it's a hot technology like SAP or Siebel and it's in shortage in AU then that PM job helps you in AU.

If it's not then you really have a choice to make. Where do you want to be in 2 yrs?

Could you do something else in those 2 yrs that will get you to that goal more effectively (i.e. degree, specialisation, contracting)?
