I would like to study French in France next year, but the requirements on the Australian embassy website seem a bit complicated. I have found at course in French at the Institut Catholique Paris however it says on the embassy website: "if you are enrolled in a French language school or for a course of civilisation française at the Sorbonne, you are not considered as a student".

Has anyone else come to France on a student visa (without being on exchange from an Australian university)? Were there any complications? Is this course okay since it's in conjunction with a recognised university? Or is the Alliance Francaise a better option?

Basically, your best bet is to check with the Campus France website (or offices). They used to require in some countries that all applications for student visas had to come through Campus France, but I haven't heard of that being done recently. In any event, the programs listed on the Campus France website are generally all qualified for student visa status.
Cheers,
Bev
