Hello,
I have a few questions about French visas for Americans. I'm engaged to a French man and would like to move to France before our actual wedding. Is it possible to get a long stay visa before we are married on paper? When will I be permitted to work in France? If anyone has any advice/tips on what steps we should take first it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
C

You need to take a look at the website for your local French consulate. But according to the Washington DC consulate site, you need to apply for a long-term visa "visiteur." You should mention your marriage plans as part of the visa application.

On arrival, you won't be permitted to work. Once you are married, you go to your local prefecture to change your status and at that point you should be allowed to work. Here's the information (in French) Visa en vue de se marier avec un ressortissant français - Consulat Général de France à Washington
Cheers,
Bev
