i have recently moved to melbourne on a 457 visa. my employer has told me that if i like it they will apply after six months to sponsor me for my permanent residency. my question is, would i be able to take my brother over on this application if granted to join me?

Only if he is 100% dependent on you and has been that way for years before. Otherwise, no you can't.

Once you have PR, and if your brother qualifies, you could sponsor him in the 176 visa.
