There is a settlement of these chabolas on the outskirts of Torre del Mar, about 5km from where I live, although much smaller than La Cañada Real. It's next to a main road but the vast majority of people seem quite oblivious to it. Successive local governments have made promises over the years to get rid of it, and resettle the inhabitants, but I suppose the question is, where, and where is the money to come from. Given the current economic situation I cannot see Spain embarking on large scale social housing construction, and even if they did, if the properties were allocated to the people currently living in the chabolas no doubt it would create a lot of resentment amongst those who have been struggling to keep a roof over their own heads these past few years.

PW: rather reminds one of Colombia, doesn't it?

Did anyone see or remember a film on BBC2 way back in the 80s called "Nada"? SWMBO worked on that and it was very telling, much more so than this programme.
