Hi all,

Am new to this forum. But i have been following this for quite sometime now.

Am a Civil Engineer with PGD in Project Management having about10 yrs of work experience performing various roles like site engineer, estimator and quantity surveying, contracts management. i.e about 3.5yrs in contracts management and co-ordination, 4 years in quantity surveying and 3 yrs as site engineer and co-coordinator.

I along with my wife have made plans to migrate to Aus.

My query is as follows :

after having done some preliminary research on net , i approached two consultants for their Initial review.

based my present job profile one consultant suggested me visa under sub class 189 and job code is 511111 - CONTRACTS ADMINISTRATOR and assessing body as VETASSESS.

Another consultant suggested me as CIVIL ENGINEER and assessing body as ENGINEERS AUSTRALIA.

After having theses reports i browsed and found that Contracts Administrator is in CSOL and CIVIL ENGINEERING is in SOL.

now am bit confused.

Can anyone please guide me in this matter.
Am planning to start my process early next month.

thanks and regards.

Hello friend,

here is my piece of advice to you:

1. Do a research on occupational ceilings and number of places occupied so far, places available, feasibility of getting invitation soon for both of these occupations. Generally go for the occupation that has higher number of seats set for the year and more seats left for the year.

2. Check your current roles and responsibilities against that of these occupations and choose the closest one that match. Moreover, check whether you are able to get letter of roles and responsibilities from your current and past companies for one job profile or not. This is one of the recommended documents to get positive outcome for skills assessment.

3. Check out the assessment body and their requirements to get your skills assessed. Some assessment authorities, for instance, engineers Australia does need IELTS scores of 6 bands in each section to apply for skills assessment. So, check their needs before starting skills assessment.

4. CSOL means, you can nly apply under 489 or 190 visa only that will restrict you within a state or region and the feasibility of finding a good paying job is narrow. So, i never recommend this, however, check whether your occupation has decent number of job vacancies in that region/state. If you are sure and confident that you can find a job in that region/state, and are able to survive there for initial 2 years, then go for it. Else, choose 189 visa that lists SOL with which you can roam around aussie.

Hope this information is useful.

hi buddy,

Good to see the description of electrical engineer defined by DIAC. Could you list your current roles and responsibilities here?

I can match them against and come up with solutions to your problems.

  • hi buddy,

i am happt to informa you that all your work experience can be claimed for skills assessment and your assessing body is Engineers Australia. Case officer/DIAC will be satisfied at least if 70-75 % roles for an occupation performed by you.

Moreover, few roles are generic as per DIAC's specification which means there might be several sub-roles and equipment in connection with that broad role. For example, As a telecom network engineer, there is an aspect called "installation, commissioning, monitoring of various telecom equipments". There are myriad equipments in telecom. so, people who deal with even few of them are eligible to get visa under this occupation. Few of them are routers, BTS, Antennas, BSC, MSC, Microwave equipemt, optical devices, etc. This doesn't mean that to get visa grant and skills assessment for telecom network engineer, you must have worked with all devices mentioned above.

Before that, do the below things.

    1. If possible, try to get letter of roles and responsibilities on all company's letterheads mentioning most of the roles defined in DIAC's website. Try to gather knowledge about those tasks at least. For sure, you will get positive outcome. But, ensure your companies are into that areas of business.

    2. Try to add other duties you performed in addition to the ones you indicated. Get reference letter for them also.

    3. If you do the above things, definitely your case will be successful.

one thing is that there is no necessary that you need to perform all duties set for your occupation by DIAC. About 75% of them will be sufficient.

    warm regards,
    sathiya
