Hello:

Would greatly appreciate if anyone can help me answer these questions:

Eligible for UKM citizenship (Born before 1983 to UK mother) and want to apply for the citizenship and currently in India:

1. Do i need to be present in UK to apply for citizenship or can apply from India and once approved then go for the ceremony?

2. Once the passport is issued is there any time limit that one needs to stay in UK, like an initial time period?

3. How soon can apply for wife and children?

4. Would the wife and children get citizenship/passport straight away?

4. Would the children and wife need to live for any specific days/months after getting the passport?

thanks

# You can apply in India.
#2 No.
#3 Apply for what? Visa? Naturalisation? Registration?
#4 No. You still need to sponsor your wife and children for settlement visa. It will take 5 years for your wife to get ILR and then apply for citizenship. Children's status varies.
#5 See above. They won't get British citizenship straightaway.

Hi Joppa:

thanks for the response.

for point # 3 meant once the Citizenship/passport is granted then only can apply for wife and children.

So the wife would get ILR immediately and can stay/work in UK but needs to stay for 5 years before applying for citizenship?

Also if the children are under 18 years of age would they get British citizenship straightaway or do they also have to wait as well?

thanks

No, you sponsor your wife and children for settlement and your wife would get ILR after 5 years of living in the UK - then comes citizenship.

Not sure about the children.

As I said in #4, your wife will get ILR after 5 years on visa in UK, and then naturalisation. Your children will probably get indefinite leave to enter visa, timed to expire when your wife's visa does (after 33 months). They can apply to register as British under Section 3(5) after 3 years in UK, when they become British otherwise than by descent. The current fee for this is £973 per child. So even though you become British by descent, your family will have to wait several years to become settled in UK and obtain British citizenship.
