Two Old Broads Abroad -- the French Adventure Begins

My suggestion would be to consider a city rather than a small town, where there will be more public transportation, a greater variety of people, more doctors and hospitals, perhaps an Alliance Française, ready access to the French administration, and more organized activities in which you might participate. Assuming you are planning for the long haul, there will come a time when you are too old to drive at which point being situated in a small town will mean reduced mobility.

A French friend married to an American explained to me that they had avoided settling in Normandy because of its xenophobic reputation. Your mileage may vary.
