We are living in France for just less than a year, and someone mentioned that we might be able to get all the TVA we pay back when we leave. Does anyone know if this is true or not, and if so, how one goes about getting the money back? I've been saving all of my receipts in the hope that this is the case.

Details on detaxe are here (in French) : Site internet de la Douane : Les conditions de détaxe au départ de France

Basically, you can only get a refund on items you are exporting back home - and the detaxe is only available for those spending less than six months in France. You have to get a form from the store when you purchase the goods, and then you have to show the goods to the customs office at the airport when you are departing France for home.
Cheers,
Bev
