Hi all

My wife and I will be moving to dubai at the end of October and we are caught between having a massive fight about where to live.

She will be working at DIFC and I will be working at Dubai Media city.

she is looking at Downtown because it would be nearer to her work and aparrently the place to be for young couples.

Also, she has been told that the Marina is way too packed and will get on our nerves.

Where as I want to live around the Marina as it's next to the beach and where it seems most of the expats predominantly live.

Is the Marina a place where you go first to live and realise it's too much?

What about the Palm Jumeirah it looks wonderful.

Could anyone help us before we kill each other?

FYI, we're looking for a 2/3 bed at around 120,000

Old Town would be your best bet... Honestly, unless you work near the Marina there is no point to live there (but that's my opinion). I rather be closer to the "rest" of the city than to live isolated in the Marina...

Eh.

There's no 'centre' to Dubai. Think of Dubai as a series of adjoining but separate neighbourhoods and that pretty much summarises it.

Marina to DIFC is, what, 20 minutes during a typical morning commute.

The Marina comes closest to a vibrant urban place outside Bur Dubai/Deira.

Western expats generally don't live in Bur Dubai or Deira. It may be interesting for a few visits or for a handful of bars, but that's about it.

Downtown Burj Khalifa (the Dubai Mall, lake, the Burj and surrounding apartments) is very pleasant and attractive and a nice place to live, but I wouldn't call it 'better' than the Marina. The Marina is more walkable with more restaurants and shops and services immediately on your doorstep, whereas Downtown is more spreadout. All of Downtown was built by Emaar, so there's a cohesive masterplanned feel to it and the finishes are fairly good quality. The Marina was built by a variety of developers so apartments do vary in quality and design and finishes.

Both the Marina and Downtown are filled with young singles and couples.

The beaches are no more than a few minutes from most of Dubai.

Another place you may want to look at is the Greens. It's quieter than the Marina but is the most lushly landscaped and has a nice community feel. The high rise towers alongside the golf course have stunning views.

It's well worth visiting all these areas when before committing to an apartment. Your budget will get you a pleasant 2-bedroom apartment in both communities.

I work at the airport and have lived in the Marina for 4 years. I wouldn`t move anywhere else, it`s got bars, restaurants, cinemas, a mall and plenty of life. Best of all I look out of my window and see the beach, the sea and the Marina, where else in Dubai has all those things?

For what it's worth, I live down near Safa Park and anytime I want to socialise, it usually involves getting a taxi up to the Marina.

Also, if you live Downtown and work at Media City, then you'll get stuck in the traffic going to/from work. However, if you work in DIFC and live in the Marina, you'll be going against the traffic to/from work so will have a quicker and stress-free commute for the most part.

The Marina is not too packed, most of the buildings are half-empty at best. Methinks you need to man up.
