I know the voltage is different in AU to US, but has anyone had experience taking US electronics, like plazma TV and blueray DVD player etc, back to Australia and used a voltage converter to step down the power to suit? It would seen this would be far less expensive that buying new again in Australia.

Yes, it does work, but voltage converters are quite heavy and some of the energy is wasted as heat. I mainly did it for a Wii and Xbox, but have also done a laser printer. Just get a large enough converter. The thing is that your TV might not support some of the resolutions that AU TVs do support (i.e. 720p/50, 1080i/50, 1080p/50). AU TVs support everything (US, AU, UK standards) and you still have a warranty to use if you need it. With your US TV you won't have warranty service here.

You can also opt to get a region free BR player which lets you switch BR regions (US in A, and AU is in B).
