Hi,
I am recently arrived in Canberra and need to choose a Superannuation Scheme. There are so many variables, the main ones being "defined benefits" v. "accumulation", my own voluntary contribution, and the toughest being the X factor of whether I will re-patriate to the US before I retire. I am 41 and have taken a continuing position at a University Arts Department and have reason to believe that my own position is stable despite general cutbacks in the arts. I can equally imagine returning to the US in 8-10 years, or staying in Oz until retirement. It seems that there are major tax implications if I "leave early" as it were. How do I insure against the worst tax senario? Do I minimize my voluntary contributions?
Thanks for any advice! I can assure you I was not brought to Oz because I am good with numbers ;)
