Speech pathology and similar jobs in Australia

Hi, I am thinking of moving to Australia, and I would like to get an information about the job possibilities there.
I work as a speech and language pathologist but English is not my mother tongue so I doubt that I could get an Independent skilled visa as an SLP at first. Ideally, my plan would be to go to Australia and work in some similar field for a year or two, in order to improve my English. Then I would get my skills assessed by SpeechPathologyAustralia (and hopefully would get a permission to work as SLP).

My question is: what kind of work should I look for? Would I be able to work as an Individual Asisstant for children with special disabilities, or some similar type of job? If so, where could I get such information?

Also, If anyone had moved there as an SLP, I would be very grateful for any kind of information or personal experience shared, about the assessment, Occupational English Test, finding a job, etc.

Thanks a million!

Hi luxica,

Since English is not your first language you would have to sit an IELTS test and get above a certain score to make sure that your English is good enough. Your English seems pretty good to me....

You also need to check out the visas as well as thinking about your job since the visa comes first :)

Sorry I don't know anything about your field - have you tried a search in google.com.au ?

Regards,
Karen

Hi Karen,

First, thanks for your answer.

Actually, I have to take an OET exam for SLPs Occupational English Test), and I have to score all A's in order to work as SLP in Australia. And that is unlikely to happen at this point, however :(

So, more or less, without the recognition of Speech-pathology-association, I cannot get the independent skilled visa.
I was thinking of finding a similar, less demanding job (in terms of language proficiency), so that I could apply for a sponsored skilled visa.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find any forums for SLPs in Australia to ask all those questions that pop out to me, so I decided to put it here. Hopefully, I'll find out something :)
