Hey guys,

have couple of queries. lil bit about me. m a software engg from india and have completed 15 years (10 yrs primary + 5 years secondary) of education, english as a medium. i have applied for Skill assessment (ACS) and m currently in the wait period for results. in the mean time i was considering sitting for IELTS but as i went thru immi.gov.au i was in double mind. following are my queries pls assist

a. "you need only take the general training test unless otherwise advised by your skills assessing authority." says DIAC (do note the grammatical mistake by DIAC :D). i understand my education being in english through out i might need to write General test, but what you suggest? should i wait for ACS results?

b. my wife will be the secondary applicant and she also had her 13 years Full Time (10 years primary education + 3 years diploma in digital electronics) of education in english. followed by which she did 3 yrs Bachelor of Business Administration through correspondence (distance education) from ICFAI which was in english.
i understand she does not have to write IELTS as stated here. correct me if i am wrong also who would be the authorized person to sign the letter stating her primary & secondary education were in english.

Please help.

Thanks

if u r going on a student visa, only then u need to take the academic module. for all other visas you take the general module.

In India, the first language is not english. even if u studied in an english medium/convent throughout u hv to sit for the ielts. we thought of the same but for PR visa our lawyer told us to go for it, incase the CO asks for it while the application is being processed, u wil hv to take the test and in India there is atleast a month's wait for the same. unnecessary delays will hamper the application process.

but anj it clearly states if ur spouse has primary & secondary edu in english u dun hv to write IELTS. Not that its difficult for my wife to write the exam but preparation is time consuming will hv to put her work in back seat.

i understand that but what if the CO asks you to sit for the IELTS once he/she is allocated? I dont know about you but we did not want to waste time. It was a metter of 7K indian rupees and we did not want to risk all the money we have put in and all the time that we waited for the CO to be allocated. Please understand that if he asks you to sit for it, you will have to wait 1-2 months just to get the available date for the test, which means u means u waste those many days/months to get the visa grant.

We had the same doubt but our lawyer asked us to appear for it anyways since English is not our first language and India does not fall in the list of countries who have an exempt for the IELTS.

Rest is your wish. you can even take a second opinion from the agents who are a member in the forum.

Adding to what Anj said, IELTS is really not tough. I don't think preparation needs more than a day. As long as she can communicate in english fairly well, scoring 6 shouldn't be problem. And she requires only 4-4.5 being secondary applicant.

the book is good.. just read thru it.. also, make sure you practice the listening and speaking. tht is where most people get confused.
the ielts result has to come to you and u hv to send the original for the visa, keep a copy.
just relax, listen carefully, keep filling the space side by side, dont sit thinking, dont waste time in the listening test and dont get distracted. i did and i lost 1 mark. got 8 in all modules but in listening i got 7. so my total was 7.5
anyway..there is a lot written about ielts, by me and others, go thru it.. wish u luck

if u got anything to ask, pls do..
