Hi everyone
My husband and I are looking to move to Orleans or the surrounding area. Does anyone know of any long term lets/gites available ? Doesn’t have to be in the city centre
We want to rent for a year or so until we find a property to buy, as we visited recently and loved it !
Thanks
Andrea

What you're looking for isn't really considered a "long term" let here in France. I assume you want a furnished rental - which usually means something like a "vacation rental." A standard French residential lease runs for 3 years and involves an unfurnished property. (Not to worry, there are provisions for ending the lease before the full 3 years are up - mostly involving giving proper notice.)

So, assuming you aren't bringing your own furniture with you, you'll be looking for a furnished place - generally, but not always, a "vacation rental." A gite may or may not meet your needs, as many gite owners only rent out space during the holiday season (however they define it) and enjoy the off season as a well-earned vacation.

That said, your best resources are the "standard" sites: seloger, le bon coin and potentially PAP (for rentals directly from the owners).

Why are you looking to move to Orleans ? What made you fall in love with Orleans ?

Orleans used to be my local city for ten years. My sister in law (French) lives near there. What I am saying is, I know Orleans.

I would have a big think before moving to Orleans personally. It is a nice place to live and work (in the right areas) but for an expat ?

For a short-term rental try AirBnB or VRBO for the first month or two, perhaps longer.
Friends of ours rented a flat via AirBnB for a month and then extended the rental with the owner for a total of one year.
For a long-term car rental go to www.autoeurope.com and see what you can get from the Peugeot/Citroen "short term" lease plans. For "rentals" between 21 and 180 days you'll get a new car, full insurance, breakdown coverage, and not have to pay VAT (20%). You'll need a non-French home address and a non-French driver's licence. How about a few train journeys during your stay?

From a tourist point of view I like Orléans. Way better than Tours to visit, IMHO. Better vibes, more interesting town centre. Got a bit of history to it.
And you can get jabs there. I was going to go all the way to Orélans for mine if I hadn't found one closer.
I never really thought about it as a place to live, but if it floats your boat why not.

I know what you are saying. There is something about Orleans. Also I prefer the countryside around the city. Particularly Solougne. So I get it.

Orleans was the first place I visited in France believe it or not. That is where Mrs Smeg lived.

That said, if you rank Tours and Orleans side by side, Tours will win on most criteria. It is a better place to live/invest in. It's safer too.

Living and visiting are two very different things.

If you go for Orleans, you really want to live in Olivet or South of Olivet towards the Solougne.

When one person says it to someone, they repeat to another and then they repeat at a dinner table to a load of other people and they repeat it.....and so forth.

That is how slang evolves.

I did say earlier, that I think it was unfair.
