We will be coming to Dubai next month to look for serviced apartments for my wife.
1. Can anyone advise whether it is the norm for viewing / booking to be conducted through an agent or can we simply visit them ourselves, view and negotiate a 6 monthly rental.
2. Has anyone recent good or bad experiences / views of doing this? My wife will be working in area adjacent to World Trade Centre and we have been looking at The Greens, around Mall of Emirates and areas close to the Metro as she is not going to be driving for the first few months. Any advice on apartments in safe areas, near to amenities and the metro would be appreciated.

Many thanks
Mark

I lived at the Layia Oaks Hotel in Tecom for about six months. During the summer time, the absolutely WILL negotiate long term rates. I would do it in person so that you can check out the hotel, and definitely test their internet connection. But you can probably email the manager and negotiate a rate that way.
