Hi Expat Forum, my wife and I are soon to retire and are considering France as the country to retire to. We are both in great health and extremely active and would like to get information regarding the possibility of finding menial work in France (childminder, maintenance work, etc). Are these opportunities available?

Well, "it depends." If you are coming to France on a "visitor" visa (the usual one for retirees), you are not allowed to work in France. This includes occasional pick-up work as a childminder or maintenance work, etc. France is fairly strictly regulated in this regard because you are required to pay into the cotisation system (i.e. social insurances) no matter what sort of work you are doing. And for this, you need a sécu (social security) number and proper registration with the various caisses.
Cheers,
Bev
