Registering a UK marriage in South Africa

Hi all

My wife and I are running into some confusion when gathering our documents for registering our British marriage in South Africa. We are both South African, and are attempting to do this through the SA embassy in London.

The instructions from the SA Dept. of Home Affairs say to provide "2 x Certified copies of your legalised document". But due to Crown copyright, you cannot just copy a marriage certificate in the UK, so you can't just get a solicitor or the post office to certify some copies.

We would therefore have to send our original, apostilled marriage certificate into the SA embassy. Unless there's another way?

We're not sure what to do. Does anyone know if the DHA will accept marriage certificates that are certified in the regular way by a solicitor or the post office?

Thanks in advance.

There are a couple of options here. You can just get some more copies of your marriage certificate from the registry office (I think they are about ÂŁ12 per copy, but don't quote me on that, it was a while ago!) and get one of those apostiled - that's what we did to register our marriage with SA in the first place.

When you photocopy a marriage certificate the photocopy comes out with 'unauthorised copy' printed over it, but an advocate friend of mine said that they would still accept that with his stamp and certification, but that seems like the riskier option!
