Recommended TV news in France

Hello

I'm finding the TV news here frustratingly shallow, and am wondering if anyone can recommend any TV news bulletins that might suit me a bit better.

In the UK, I would watch Channel 4 News, which tends to give 5 to 10 minutes to an important story and covers both national and international news. I'd also be quite happy watching the BBC's News at Ten, as I appreciate the space they give experienced journalists to give some analysis of major events.

Here, I have mostly seen the 20h of France 2, but have the impression that the format is quite similar elsewhere. Even the top stories of the day only get a 2 minute report, the journalists all sound the same and don't appear to be specialists on particular issues, there's little explanation of the background issues or why things are happening, and there's less international news than I'd like.

There's a lot I like on the radio (France Inter, France Culture), but would like to find something I can watch with my partner in the evening.

Any recommendations?

thanks
Roger

I've just been thinking the same thing about the TV news here - though I watch the 20h on TF1 mainly for the language practice. France Info has a TV channel, as does TFI (TF1 news channel on "cable" - through a Internet provider) that might give you more of what you want. However both channels tend to do lots of "talking heads" programs that analyze various news items to death, complete with "experts" mostly from the world of academia. You could try France 24 (also a "cable" station) that at least reports on more international stuff and has programming to concentrate on a single issue for half an hour at a time or more. France 24 comes in French, English and Arabic versions - though they no longer broadcast the same programming at the same time, just in different languages, which used to be really fun to watch just to switch back and forth among the various languages.

Thank you, I'll give it a try!

Unfortunately you already have the correct answer - i.e. only radio for news - which leaves the TV only for the likes of ARTE or one of the French channels, when they have free shows (e.g. Quelle époque), movies or series worth watching - latter category especially in an attempt to improve my French. I did - in fact - try FranceInfo and BFM, on TV, for a while, then I dropped TV news altogether, and stuck with radio for up to date info, local or global.

There really isn't a French TV station that will meet your needs and the change in ownership of France Inter means that even the programs you like remain subject to significant change.

Public Senat sometimes does some good in depth discussion of French issues.

For good investigative journalism, you could watch some of the videos produced by Mediapart, but they are not shown on TV. Try searching on the internet for their videos a l'aire libre (free to view) to see what you think.

I'm afraid you either get "shallow" news on the 20 heures or in depth discussions on one or two issues on the guest-expert type programmes.
I watch France 5 most evenings: C Ă  vous, C ce soir, C dans l'air and for the fun of it Quotidien on TMC.
And occasionally a longer programme, depending on the subject: Complément d'enquête, Envoyé spécial and Cash investigation...

I watch the same progress, though certainly not every day.

The issue I have is balance, which doesn't seem to exist here. That being so, I find I also have to look at many internet sites that are not on TV and whose reports are rarely if ever reported on mainstream TV (and French TV is definitely mainstream, as IMHO is French radio.

I don't have a recommendation as I can barely understand any of the many "shallow" newscasts, which I mainly watch just to improve my bad French (looking for the best e-nun-ci-a-tion). I usually watch the 6-9 in the morning on LCI then switch to Arte.

Why not watch BBC 4 if that is what you want?

You can watch BBC News on French TV. I know because I gave it a go some time ago. On my TV BBC programs are somewhere above channel 500,and there are lots of them, including British series and news services.

I agree there are lots of other ways to improve your French, but am happy if you can't actually understand LCI and just use it to attune your ear to spoken French lol.

Of course you can always watch Netanyahu on LCI this evening. Perhaps they will invite someone to represent Palestine (a state now recognized by numerous other countries, in the interest of balance, but I doubt it.

Franceinfo is pretty good in the evenings. I have just listened (but didn't understand much!) to Bérengère Bonte discussing the pharmacist strike (20h00-21h00) and afterwards until midnight is Julian Langlet who mixes the news with sport (which I do understand a bit !).
