Brittany or Alsace-Lorraine?

Thanks

Although one thinks that Brittany would be the more touristy of the two having the sea and such an amazingly beautiful coastline Alsace/Lorraine can be touristy too, Metz especially. It really pushes itself with fĂŞtes and markets - especially at Xmas. It does have some really great museums though.
Brittany is succeeding in selling itself as an area of outstanding natural beauty with nature reserves and underdevelopment along the coastal strip - though there are some tacky areas.
Our neighbours (holiday home) come to our corner of Golfe de Morbihan from near Metz for the peace and quiet .. though they come here in the school holidays when the population increases exponentially. Here in winter - well most of the year really - it is a haven of calm.
It really does depend on doing your homework. We arrived in winter and rented gites for 4 months, most of which we spent in the car touring round until we found where we wanted to be.

Both regions can be as touristy or as bleak as you like depending on where you live.

Given the choice, I 'personally' would go for Alsace because I like Alsace.

Why just Brittany and Alsace ?

Why not Auvergne ?

Well okay, I like Brittany! I've never been to Alsace, though, so you can take that with a grain of salt. But one of my favorite places I've visited in France so far was a small coastal village in Brittany, so there's that. I kinda want to go back. If someone offered me the chance to move to Brittany or Alsace right this moment, I'd go with Brittany. Because I've been there and liked it. (Though, again haven't been to Alsace so who knows)

Hello from Brittany

We have lived in the Finistere for almost 6 years and have found that it is only touristy during the Vacances Scolaires and the Summer, particularly in August .... but not so much as to prevent us from having our normal lives. It is easy to find parts of the coast that are relatively unspoiled and uncrowded even with Tourist incursions, as Brittany is only on the radar for the initiated. It is quite temperate although we have had a very rainy Winter, which makes for a very lush Spring and Summer (fingers crossed).

If you love seafood it is THE place to be, and most of the other regional specialties are available year round .... local beer and cider abound, and obtaining oen's wine of choice is never a problem! People are welcoming and curious about us, life here is good!

I agree with Gwendy, although I am in Cotes d'Armor. I have owned a home here for almost 30 years and in 2016 made the decision to retire from paid work and live here permanently. Much to see and do in Brittany. I see friends down south a couple of times a year in Bormes les Mimosa and always find it a relief to come back up - it is so touristy and crowded down there.

We are looking in Côtes dArmour - we love nature walks and bicycling on greenways (coastal and woodlands/forest) and seafood — which towns would you recommend that are lively with a weekly market, cabinets médicals, pedestrian centres ? We are retired. We would like to have gîtes as I was a hotelier. Thank you.

Yeah even from the only two times I've been to Brittany (well that smaller town), it didn't seem very touristy at all. Even in June. I think like qwendy said, it's matter of finding an "unspoiled" part of the coast, but I think you'd be able to.
