Hi ,
I got reference letter on a company(one of top product company) letter head but the content is very generic and doesn't state anything specific about my project.
The content is as follows:

"As a member of software engineering division, he was applying basic to intermediate knowledge of software architecture to perform software development tasks associated with developing, debugging or designing software application or operating systems according to provided design specifications. Build enhancements within an existing software architecture and occasionally suggest improvements to the architecture."

My doubt is: does this content will hold good for "software engineer" assessment ?

Thanks for your time.

Suggest you get an additional statutory declaration from your line manager which describes your duties in detail and also states which technologies you are working on.

Is this for DIAC or ACS? if for ACS it may be not sufficient it needs to be a lil bit more detailed at least 1 full page long, not 2 sentences (mine was 3 pages) from my experience, go to anzco code of software engineer and read the details description of ur job. The job description on ur letter should closely match the job requirements on ANZCO, doing that should guarantee quick +ve result from acs. also add some project work examples, training u received, etc.

majority here write the letter themselves in detail, and then ask their boss or companies to sign it on their letter heads, etc. Would you be able to do that ? If not, maybe you can provide them with the extra details and ask them to write it down. Again most important is your job description should be similar to ANZCO requirement for the same job.

I applied for RPL and none of my job references were over half a page long. So it need not be three pages but the right content must be there.

Try to cover the below points if your applying for SE. Not all points should be covered but at least 60-70% should be there in your service letter. Good if you could include the projects you took part in as well.

Description
design, develop, test, maintain and document program code in accordance with user requirements, and system and technical specifications.

Tasks

researching, consulting, analysing and evaluating system program needs
identifying technology limitations and deficiencies in existing systems and associated processes, procedures and methods
testing, debugging, diagnosing and correcting errors and faults in an applications programming language within established testing protocols, guidelines and quality standards to ensure programs and applications perform to specification
writing and maintaining program code to meet system requirements, system designs and technical specifications in accordance with quality accredited standards
writing, updating and maintaining technical program, end user documentation and operational procedures
providing advice, guidance and expertise in developing proposals and strategies for software design activities such as financial evaluation and costings for recommending software purchases and upgrades

Thanks for all replies. The conclusion I got is it is not sufficient but the issue is :I have given them my format, but they said we have set format for this kind of request and can not provide more than this . I have worked 6 years back in this company and I am not in touch with any manager/seniors there.
So any advice ?

I guess you will have to explain to them your reason. Tell them that your going to apply for ACS and that your purpose will not be served by getting the above letter.

try to prepare a draft which covers the main points of SE and include them in your letter. Since you have left long ago they will not issue you a in detail letter. so if you can get a letter at least half a wage long will the necessary points i think it should be ok.

Don't worry even I had many issues getting a service letter. Initially i prepared a draft of 3 pages long and send it to HR. but I finally got a 1 page doc which luckily was enough for me to get through....:)
