Well, it seems that Perth is not exactly ahead in the polls of top places for expats to move to. There seems to be a lot of posts on the forum of late from people struggling to make friends or just generally not enjoying being in Perth.

Well, Perth was my third expat move and along the way, I've learnt a few lessons on how to make friends and become part of my new community. At the same time, I do appreciate how hard it is to leave our nearest and dearest behind and move thousands of miles away to a place where we barely know a soul!

So, considering that there has been a steady stream of people arriving in WA of late, I though it would be a good idea to organise an expat day out, where we can all socialise. We all have something in common in that we are migrants - Aussies are very much welcomes to join as well - so, hopefully, some new friendships will come out of this and we can all start enjoying what WA has to offer.

Now, I'm quite happy in a bar but appreciate that not everyone is comfortable in that kind of setting and some people would also have family and therefore a bar does not necessarily sit at the top of list of places where to hang out, so I'm looking for any suggestions of things to do.

I've attached a poll to this thread just to see whether people are up for meeting and we can then take it from there.

I did vote provided it is in Melbourne :p.. you are doing a great job maz..

I think a great outing would be going out to a park, had it been in Melburne I would have suggested a meetup at the park on a good sunny day..

I think most people work, so we should probably keep it for the weekend.

I'm open to suggestions :)

May i suggest that it should be done like once in a quarter or more...so that new expats also have an opportunity to join in as and when they reach perth...I know I will definitely like to meet up when I get there eventually!

Yes definitely it should be done periodically and not be on one-off basis...

I would love to join the meetup...assuming the plan is still on :) I dont see any post since a month in here :p

I suggest for the first meetup we can all have coffee in the city or something. Later on we can try various activities and stuff, if people are interested.
Cheers

Hello Maz how did you get on with organising the perth expat day? Hope it has taken off and you will be organising/coordinating several perth expat day's in the future. I look forward to being a part of this someday. Keep up your fab work on this forum.

Hi Maz,

Presume your non response so far means that the perth expat day did not happen.
No worries. I will give you a hand once I am down there and let us pick up the mantle and organise the 1st perth expat day. :)

Cheers

Hi there

The level of interest in the day out was pretty much non-existent, so I think it's safe to say that this idea has died a slow death. I think lots of people feel lonely when they first arrive and like the idea of meeting up but unfortunately, this does not follow through with actually joining up with other expats and actually doing something.

Ha ha, somehow I think it might be a tad expensive to come down to Sydney just for a day out - the return trip from Perth would itself take a whole day. :)

There are loads of families in Perth, so Im sure that you will have no trouble meeting other families. With Perth boasting a mainly outdoor lifestyle, once you start taking your kids out to playgroups, swimming lessons, etc, I'm sure that you will bump into other parents and make friends.

I am still game for a meet up. Infact been waiting to hear from others. I am guessing it's arrival dates that are a problem. I have been in Perth for two months now. There are good days and bad days and since I am here on my own it would be good to catch up with fellow expats here!
