I live in Canada and my US passport has expired. I must apply by mail. Instructions are asking for money order or cheque drawn on us bank, which of course I can't provide because I have Canadian credit union accounts. If I mail a money order drawn on Canadian credit union will it disappear in the system?

Ask for a bank draft in U.S. funds at your bank (fee applies). It will be drawn on a U.S. bank.

I know this for a fact... when I moved to the UK from Vancouver, to get married, I moved my CAD$ to the UK in the form of a bank draft in GBP £ and the draft (from VanCity) was drawn on a UK bank.

ETA: You have to go to your bank to order the draft, as U.S. regulations require financial institutions to know with whom they are dealing before any transaction is completed.
