Dear Mods and Senior Expats,

I've a client in the US that I know for a long time and he is looking to hire me in their Chicago office. To be honest, I don't have a formal college degree.
However, I've 18 years of work experience in various fields - advertising, web design, internet marketing etc.

Can I qualify for a H1B or other similar Visa which enables me to work in USA.
I'm from India. I've a B1 and visited USA twice. However, I'm sure, I cannot work with a B1.

Please advise if I can qualify for a H1B with my 18 years of work experience.
Also, can I take my wife and 2 kids with me to the US.

I appreciate your advice in this regard.

Many thanks in advance.

Correct you vannot work on a B visa
A minimum 12 years experience equates to a degree for h1B purposes
the company should get all your documents to the immigration lawyer
by april 1st ..
if sucessful you will get a visa and can enter the US for an Oct start
the wife and children can get an H-4 visa ...they cannot work

you can arrive 10 days earlier then the start date

Could you please let me know for how long the H1B would be valid.
Also, can I extend it when it is about to expire.
Please advise.

Many thanks for your help.

Just one word of caution: As twostep mentions, you cannot apply for the visa yourself. Your employer-to-be must take the necessary steps to sponsor you for a visa. Not all employers in the US are able (or willing) to go through the process to sponsor a foreigner for a work visa. It is not an easy process, nor is it free of costs for the employer. (And the employer is NOT allowed to recover any of the costs from you, the employee.)
Cheers,
Bev
