Gulfnews often makes many silly and ridiculous mistakes (not even talking about typos or grammar here), and have horrible taste when it comes to reporting tragic news. Adolf Hitler dying of tuberculosis, the cartoonish infogram of the mother jumping to death after her boy fell off the window, swapping the German flag for the French one (just a few days ago) etc. come to mind. That's not proper journalism.
Funny you brought this up, at least the silly and ridiculous mistakes can be caught by ordinary people like us, but that newspaper is read by many. I was reading about a guy who lost his memory due to an accident and the readers of gulfnews found the guy's family. It is a powerful paper if read by many. The typos don't bother me they are learning and will get there. If I am not mistaken it was gulfnews.
Talking about proper journalism, I read several good articles in FT (middle east), and I also read some bad ones. There are bad mistakes in opinion making. Although well structured, some articles were based on poor assumptions, and was totally misleading I mean totally. I had to stop reading because I was getting upset how the opinion maker was unfolding the view. I think these type of articles really really bad journalism because an ordinary guy would not know whether the assumptions were right or wrong in the first place since he would need to have learned a great deal about the topic at hand which is not usually the case.
I am totally in favour in opinion making provided one uses the assumptions properly and have expertise on the topic.
Grammar....if you think papers like gulfnews make mistakes in grammar, even the English ones (mean all Aussie, Canadian, USA and UK you name it) makes and you will be amazed at how many good books are full of mistakes and bad style (these are supposed to be reviewed for Gosh sake!!!!
I am talking about books that I read (published in US and UK). I read books where one chapter was written by an English guy and the second chapter by an American guy. You could see the spelling of the same word written differently, like "analyse" and "analyze" and certain differences like "color" and "colour" on the same book, but honestly; although interesting in terms of different styles you kill the harmony of the book. I went and checked on the Authors and bingo! American and British.
It was fun to read a polite chapter 1 and then go to a more practical chapter 2 LOL. Don't get me wrong it was a fantastic book. I usually find some grammar mistakes and it disturbs me because I stop reading shaking my head "that's wrong". Neither joe or john "is" not "are" and I tend to give S*T to the publisher for missing that kind of error it is not acceptable.
