Hi Im a newbie to all this so please be gentle!!!!! Were hoping to relocate to Melbourne but having not been before we wondered if someone could give us any indication as to the best areas/towns/suburbs outside of melbourne itself. We have friends in Geelong but South East Melbourne keeps cropping up as being a good place can anyone advise? would really appreciate your help.

Hi there,

Welcome to the forum.

This question has cropped up a lot so if you do a search you'll find out info on the different suburbs. Also, a good website is citihobo. It gives a brief description of some suburbs.

We have family in Geelong/Ocean Grove...I love it down there.

If you could, it's worth biting the bullet and coming over for a reccie trip. You can then drive through areas, get a feel of the different suburbs, check out schools etc if you have children.....it was the best thing we did. It took the mystery and apprehensiveness away so when we went back to the UK and started our planning, they knew which suburb we'd be living in, which school they were going to etc......it helped enormously.

Have you checked out the stickies at the top of the forum page? There's lots of useful info there.

Hi there

We have just moved to Vic 5 weeks ago from the Uk. We have settled in Aspendale (SE suburb). We had not been before and reasearched the areas on the internet getting a selection. Upon arrival it was quite easy to tour round these and get a feel for them (depends how much you trust your instincts). In the first few days though people would stop and chat with us and give their opinions. I've met another English couple who started in Geelong (and loved it) but due to work needed to be nearer the city and are now here in Aspendale. It really depends what you want from an area, what work you can get etc. But the SE suburbs are lovely from what I've seen so far.

Good luck

Hi Sheila,

We had friends who lived in Aspendale, opposite the train station. They had less than 20 steps and they were on the beach!

Thanks for the info we will have a good look at the different towns on the internet and see if we can get a feel for one we would like. We do have two kids one that has just started school over here so we would need to be near a good school. we just want a better life for them more of an outdoor and active life. Thanks again will probably be back with more questions as there is so much to find out. :)

We get everything known to the Australian man....great whites, stone fish, box jelly fish, crocs, blue ringed octopus, sea snakes, moray eels, stingrays, stinging seaweed, ...the whole bay is flippin chokka with 'em..... You can't dip a toe in without it being chomped or stung!
