Does anyone know of a really good B & B within 20-30 mins from Hackney (place of employment soon). I am relocating to the UK to work in Hackney this Oct however I need a place to stay until I can secure more permanent lodgings. I am totally unfamiliar with the UK transportation system so I thought that I should stay close to my new job until I learn my way around a little.

Moving to UK from US

Hi Heather, thanks for your reply...No I have never been to London. I have been told that Hackney is not a place that I would want to reside in...I don't plan to live there however I would like to reside in a very nice area that is less than an hour from my place of work (Monument St). I thought that a B&B would be best until I secure housing with or without a flatmate...Do you think that the North or North Western part of London would be better? This was a suggestion by a London relocation specialist. What are your thoughts about Stoke Newington? I would like to live in a place that is walking distance from some nice restaruants, shopping, etc...I will not be bringing my car so public transportation will be my mode of operation...Unfortunately and I will not be able to make a decision until I actually move there and see what I get for my money...That is why I decided to stay in a B&B or hotel until I can fully settle in...My agency will be covering relocation costs so I do have a little time to secure a nice place to live. Also, I read somewhere that even if you rent you have to pay a council tax (property) is that true?

No I am not familiar with Hackney or any other areas of London...I am willing to commute to work. However I would like for my commute to be less than an hour away from my job. The closer the better...however safety, and a pleasant environment is far more important to me than being close to my place of employment. I will be working near Monument Street in Hackney...I do enjoy the city vs the countryside...I would like to have quick access to public transportation as I will be leaving my car in the US during my stay there. I prefer a room mate (to decrease my expenses) however I am comfortable living alone if need be...I thought that I would stay in a B&B or hotel until I secure more permanent living quarters...Thanks for your help...I have so much more to learn before I come over...

Hi

I live in London, do you know anything about Hackey at all? Have you been to London before? Hackney can be quite intimidating, it's quite run-down in some areas and have to say it's not the sort of place I'd want to stay on my own.

Just wanted to check you're fully aware of what you're getting into. You'd be hard pushed to find a nice B&B in Hackney so you might want to look further afield or places like Bromley or Bow. Closer to the city like Liverpool Street the transport links are very good but accommodation will be more expensive. This tube map will show you the nearby areas:

Also it would be worth you looking at Gumtree.com: UK's No. 1 in classifieds - jobs, property, cars and more as it has plenty of short-term rental accomodation and services.

Good luck and let me know if you need any further advice!

Heather
