Hello Everyone,
I am very glad to know about this forum.Sorry, I am sure i am going to ask few questions that many other people might have asked before. I have just registered myself few moments ago.
I am 32 years old, Industrial Engineer and have been working in Canada in Manufacturing and Logistics for last 7 years. I am planning to move to UAE in Feb-2010 due to family concerns. I have been looking for jobs over the internet but no response at all and many people told me that jobs are not easily offered through the internet and better to visit as personal meetings help in getting jobs. So far i have not really seen many jobs in manufacturing or logistics.
Can some one related to this field help me and let me know the best way to find jobs under this catagory.
I really donot know any one there except one friend. Is there a particular area where all the expats prefer to live.
Can you please suggest me places in Dubai where i could increase my social circle and make new friends.
Thank you
Alex

Thanks

I'm in construction/consulting so I'll try and assist.

Everyone lives all over the place so there is no one specific area defined for expats. The Marina is a spot for single guys and a lot of people for socializing, but it's almost more about networking so when you find work here ask those people in the company where they hang out and live.

Construction/engineering positions will be difficult to come by in my opinion as the jobs have dried up, but that's not to say you can't find something. Those that have positions aren't really going anywhere just yet. Making a holiday trip and looking for work is not a bad move. Pick up a local mobile phone and have a list of companies to contact, copies of your CV to drop off with someone, and give it a go. Best of luck.

Don't do it would be my advice.

I am only guessing at your family concerns and would say life over here is stressful enough without whatever it is weighing you down. It can also be very lonely depending on your ability to socialise etc.

If you want to get away from it all then Dubai is not a good option IMHO. esp for down to earth Canadians.

If you do end up coming over here then Manager role is pretty much the only thing that will pay what you need to survive. So you need to get your head around leading a team of pakistani/indian/jordanian/egyption/lebanese resources.

Before I came over here a good friend said "come with eyes wide open" and keeping your mind open to all the negative as well as the shiney shiney stuff is very important. loads on this forum will criticise for being too negative but hey, it is what it is.

Good luck eh.

hi fortune,

i recently relocated to dubai from abu dhabi, most of the people i know are either far away or back to their home countries so i'd like to meet some new friends here as well.
i am an urban planner, not exactly your profession, but i believe you may find the list below useful to you.
what you also should expect is, when you list your cv on one of these sites you may get a phone call from a totally different agency for they share their databases. that is what happened to me. so if you do not see a managerial position it doesn't mean they don't exist.

best of luck

edit: i apparently need to have sent 5 messages to post links. nnox.dxb(at)gmail(dot)com is my public email, i can send you the list if you mail me your address.

i've mailed you the list. abu dhabi rents are much higher than dubai. and even when the rents in dubai were ridiculously high, they were not even close to abu dhabi. i'm not sure if there are more job opprtunities, all i can say is the situation is better than it was two months ago. on the other hand make a google search for dubai world (a huge government owned company here) and decide yourself.

Dubai World? Have you not seen the news recently? They are in massive financial difficulties.
