Looking for where to live in Sydney

Hi,
I'm new to the forum. We've just been told that we have a minimum 2 year stint in Sydney, Australia. The job is in North Sydney (Alfred Street) but we have 3 children aged 10 and under that we will have to arrange schooling for.

We're not sure whether to buy or rent (although we want to keep our property in the UK) but we're looking for a house with a minimum of 3 bedrooms in a reasonable area with a reasonably good school that is no more than 45-60 mins to work.

Can anyone suggest where we might begin to look?

Have no idea how much to spend but I'm guessing we'd have to look at rent of around $500 per week - although we'd much rather buy at that price.

Thanks:eek:

hi M

have a look at the sticky threads, u should ideally look at the real estate websites, city hobo is good for info about suburbs.

Amaslam is form Sydney, if you give more details about your work place, I am sure he will have a lot of helpful info for u

Hi Maccabilly:

There is a train stop there, so you can take a train. Also buses run from the Northern Beaches.

You should look at North Shore and Northern beaches suburbs. However you will not be able to buy @ $500/wk (rent yes, but not buy)

You should rent initially as there are lots of areas that you can commute from within 60 mins (The Hills areas is possible also). Then once you've been here for a bit you can really find out where you want to buy and whether you have the budget for it.

Northern Beaches is nice, but more pricey than the Hills District. The Hills District is 'middle class', leafy, safe, excellent schools, low crime, affordable (but BIG) houses...there's no trains, but are buses to North Shore, City, Parramatta etc. It's a brilliant place to raise the kids - plenty to do for them, bowls, cinemas, shops, paintballing, etc, etc but can be a tad dull for the adults depending on what you like to do. Mostly eating out, bbq's, golf, etc, etc around here. There's also a group called Newcomers based here which is specifically for ...well, 'newcomers' to the area which put on regular social activities etc.
I think you need to be very real here, you will struggle to find something for $500 for you and your Family and you will need to push that up to $600+
You might be lucky and get a ground floor 3 bed Apt,as you will not want a high floor,so ideally you are looking for a decent house.
my favorite suburb in Sydney is Hornsby, little far from North Sydney.

My Favorite :D
