Living in Tokyo on ¥5-6M Salary

Hi everyone,

I'm considering a job offer in Tokyo with a salary range of ¥5-6M per year plus a (potential?) bonus of ¥1-1.5M. While I'm excited about the opportunity, I want to ensure it's financially feasible to make the move (I live in the American Midwest, and the company offers visa sponsorship and relocation assistance).

Would this salary and bonus be enough to:

  • Secure a decent apartment (ideally not a shoebox!) in a safe area with reasonable commute to central Tokyo?
  • Cover living expenses like groceries, utilities, phone, and transportation?
  • Leave some room for leisure activities such as gym memberships, occasional dinners out, and weekend exploring?
  • Allow for some savings without feeling perpetually pinched?

Any insights on specific areas to consider living in or budget breakdowns for similar situations would be incredibly helpful!

Thanks so much for your help!

Bonus question:

  • Are there any hidden costs I should be aware of (taxes, insurance, etc.)?

I'm eager to learn as much as I can before making this big decision. Thanks again for your time and expertise!

I stayed in JP for about 6 months in 2016 and came to the conclusion its (very) expensive (After comparing to some places I lived longer Shanghai, San Francisco and Amsterdam) . Living: depends where you stay. The further away from greater Tokyo, the cheaper it gets. My 40m2 1 br apt in Nishi Sjinjuku (was 25 min from my work place) cost 2800$/month. Typically 1 hr to 90 min train travel makes it affordable. Common food is expensive (surely compared to the US midwest), but the quality is always good. Transportation is also not cheap. On the other had taxes are (very) low. Income tax for your range is up to 20%. National health insurance pays typically about 70% of the cost, the rest is yours to take care of. There are also things that are 100% personal pay.
In short, I think 5MY (32k$) is a low salary for a person living in the Tokyo metropolitan.
