Hello,

Im interested in Lefkara as the school looks lovely and the village looks very nice and doesnt seem to be a tourist/commuter ghost town.

Could you please let me know if it is commutable to Nicosia and if it is a nice place to live? As stated on other threads I have kids that will attend a local greek school so any experiances would be great.

Please feel free to PM and tel me the truth (if you don't want to upset anyone).

Part of my motivation of going to CY is to integrate but it would also be nice if there were one or two other English familys around. My nightmare would be one of these Dagenham on sea places (but i dont think there are any in CY anyway).. Sorry Dagenhamites!

Cheers

Lefkara is one of the heritage highlights of Cyprus, gets very busy in the summer (well it did before the slump) and also choked with tourist buses etc. Pano Lefkara (where the school is) and Kato Lefkara (the smaller village below the main town) has a combined population of 1,100 (mostly Cypriots) with a smattering of Russians, English, French and others in the town. The majority of buildings there are empty (the population was once much higher) and are slowly being preserved through agrotourism and lettings to summer visitors.

It takes about forty minutes to get to Lefkara from Nicosia, but if you plan to work in Nicosia (depending on where in the city you'll be working) it could take much longer to get to work as the traffic bottlenecks at the Bank traffic lights as the highway reaches the City outskirts at Strovolos. It can take anything up to an hour to get from there to parts of the city, so the commute in could take up to 1.5 hours unless you get up very early.

My wife used to teach at the school in Lefkara so I'll ask what it's like and get back to you...

Fantastic thaks very much! I really appreciate your help.

I will be on Makarios III so wont hit the central "ring ringroad" but will have to come off the highway with everyone else.

We were there a few days ago. It's a very scenic village and your wife wont need a car there unless she wants to go to town. It is a bit touristy-day trippers- but in my opinion this keeps the village alive.
As for the drive I agree with Kimonas as the traffic is before you reach Nicosia uptill Makariou.
