Hello Everybody,

Finally booked the tickets for Melbourne via Thai Air:plane: but I have a nagging question regarding personal item in Thai air.

I wanted to carry my laptop in a backpack apart from the carry-on bag. Am I allowed to carry it or should I dump it in my carry on luggage?

I know other carriers like Singapore air and Qantas allow a personal item along with the carry-on luggage.

Any fellow members experienced/travelled via Thai?

Regards,
Roy

Hi Royen:

It's not an issue, Thai is like most airlines and considers the laptop a personal item not subject to the carry on weight limit. You can carry it in its own case/bag and have a carry on bag as normal

Good luck :)

Hi Anj,

I had initially booked my flight to Sydney for 14th Jan but due to last minute priorities rebooked it for Melbourne. I m flying this 15th Jan. No job yet :( but yes the IT job scenario is definitely improving.

I m under notice period, Jan 8th being my last here at my company. Seems to me that I m destined for Melbourne. Anyways, I think Melbourne should be comparable to Sydney for IT.

Now busy preparing for interviews, mugging up tons and tons of interview questionnaires etc. Fingers crossed.

I m going alone to start with and as my initial entry is 5th May so would come back in April back to India and pick up my family at that time. Learning to cook as well. :)

Thanks,
Roy

Hi Roy

My suggestion would be to take as much as you can, since you wud be allowed 30 kgs (including hand luggage) so that you dont have to come back and think about what to leave and what to take. do u have friends there? u can always leave stuff there with them..
and dont u worry about the work bit, for IT there is work everywehre, even in regional areas, i know someone who went the regional route (he had 175 so had an option of going anywehre). he went to victoria, not in melbourne but in a smaller town, he got work in no time, his initial setup cost was low so he did not have to spend too much from his savings. dont u worry, go with a positive mind and good things will happen

wish u all the luck.

Do keep us posted
cheers

Thanks Anj , Amaslam , Mr. India for your replies. Yes I do have hope(infact lots of it) and am sure will get to my dream shortly. It certainly boosts my confidence hearing your friends story.

I do have a few friends in Melbourne but not sure whether to bother them or not. Anyways I have confirmed with Thai airways today and they told they would allow one personal item along with the carry on luggage.

Also an update, I got to know that baggage allowance is 40Kgs if its a one way ticket. So it is 40Kg irrespective if you enter Australia for the first time or later. So dont know what to pack in the 40Kg. Today I tried dumping all my clothes in one and it hardly budged beyond the 12Kg mark. So thinking hard, do I need to shop more or not.

Regarding the job front, I have got the scenario already as giving 7 interviews certainly gave me the Aussie perspective. I have decided to look for job for the initial month and then take on casuals/temp jobs to sustain.

Thanks again.

Roy

Hi Roy,

Have a safe journey. Wish you all the best with your job search. Wish you get a good-pay long term job at first interview itself.

I recently accepted VIC SS and will be moving to Melbourne. May be we will meet at Melbourne? What's you IT specialization?

12 kgs, well try adding all your shoes, towel, toiletries, some utensils, and then weigh it :p..
what u shud do is carry utensils, things tht u know u hv to carry with u but are not being used or ur family can do without it right now, some of your family's stuff which they want to tk but are not using. home applicances, bed sheets/covers, there are so many things, ask your spouse and she would have a list.. what i mean is dont waste the extra bag allowance that you are getting right now.. you anyways will be moving in 3-4 months, might as well start gathering things now.

make sure u carry a tool kit, a multi plugs extension cord (so that u dont have to change plugs for everything). dont fill the bag with toiletries, not worth it, there is not much of price difference and u wud have to buy it anyways once ur supply is over. make sure u carry a pressure cooker with extra rubber beading and whistles. other thn this, maybe things at home like glassware etc which u dont want to leave behind, u can always take it with u..
