Is it worth it ?

Hi.
I'm considering moving to France and I want to know your opinions if you are kind to offer them.

I've got an offer from a tech company in Nice area, software development, 42k/year gross.
After my calculations (where I dropped social contributions + income tax), this results in somewhere around 2,500 eur per month.

I would like to know your opinions on how decent of a salary is that in France and how that impacts the standard of living, i see that decent rents in the area are somewhere around 800-900 eur/month.

Would the standard of living be enough to, let's say, go out at restaurants around 3 times a week and have vacations abroad around 3 times a year ?

I'm coming from a country where software developers are paid very well in comparison with the consumer prices and it seems a hard choice, but I'm aware that its a very beautiful area and thats a good advantage.

Knowing if that is a reasonable salary and if you could comfortably live on it depends on your situation ( dependents…?), and whether you mean 3x weekly €100 menus, or 3x €20 menus….anyway, you might decide once in Nice, that you can forego the 3x annual holidays abroad - imho you don’t need them.
From what I know, this is one of the costliest parts of Fr. - reputation for rich retirees, rich expats - and consequential costs, plus the other extreme of the population range.
Is the offer commensurate with your level of experience ?
it sounds like not much above an entry level professional salary: ask for better.

If I recall correctly, I don't think Frodo would have been too worried about disposable income. You are either up for the challenge or you're not.

If the company really wants you they would be prepared to offer you more if you negotiate. With around 1500 eur left after rent per month you will still have to pay for phone/internet and other bills. Of course you can make it work (eat out and have holidays) but it won't be lavish. The upside is the opportunity to live in a great part of France and it might also open new doors professionally. You are asking if it's worth it and it's up to you, but I would accept a pay cut in exchange for this new experience.

Although with no interest in employment, in my case, I could tell you that I started a while ago by looking first @ Numbeo (in your case here), then comparing with where I used to live until just a few weeks ago, to get a rough idea of what I was looking at, for my move plans. Maybe it helps with your perspective, if you plug in your present location, then do a ratio of your present salary to the one which was offered to you in France. HTH.
