Can anyone explain why my husband can't get a Medicare card as they couldn't really explain to me in the shop.

The Republic of Ireland and New Zealand have reciprocal Health Care Agreements with Australia and as result, passport holders of these countries are not required to have health insurance cover. This Health Care Agreement covers treatment that is medically necessary for ill-health or injury which occurs during your approved visit to Australia, for the duration of your approved visit to Australia.

The entitlements include free treatment as a public in-patient or out-patient at a public hospital and access to subsidised medicine.
