Hello good people. I am freaking out a bit right now. My wife, who is Scottish and a UK citizen, have been married and living in the USA for the last 5+ years. She is living in Scotland right now and will be for the next 6 months while I am in the USA finishing things up. I will go there in the winter and we will go the Surinder Singh Ireland route.

Cutting to the chase, what can we do if we do not have our original marriage certificate that we got in the USA? We can get a certified copy here but that is the best we can do. Will this be a problem?

Thanks,

Jack

A certified copy is fine. It's most likely that the supposed "original" marriage certificate you had was actually a certified copy. The issuing authorities (town/city clerk) don't usually give the original to the couple (for reasons exactly such as this one), they make a copy and stamp/seal it.
