ILR and LITUK test timing

My wife's FLR runs out in July 2018. She won't have been in the UK for 5 years by then (about one month short of 5 years). This is due to her late arrival back in 2013 due to the illness of her mother which delayed her departure from her home country.

We will apply for her ILR at the last minute in July 2018 and do it by post - this was the advice given by the forum for her FLR application in 2015 and it worked fine.

My question concerns the Life in the UK test, when does she need to do that? Can she do the test now? Presumably she's got to have done it (and passed) before we apply for the ILR. She has a passport from a majority English speaking country.

As far as I am aware you can take the test at any time (there is no expiry date to the results) BUT you need to keep the letter you get with your results safe and cherish it like gold, because they don't reissue it if you lose it.
