ok already seen some negative on another site. It seem if we come to Spain and retire buy a home. Which will be our only home.we will have no Uk assets. It seems if one of us was to pass away the spouse is left with a huge bill against assets over 16k variable in some regions. Can this be true? Only we will not be rich just a reasonable home around 200k and small amount of emergency savings and our UK pensions. So would not be be able to afford thousands of pounds. This has become a much bigger worry as bad enough losing your spouse. We will of take out Spanish will and Furneral Plans as aware of need for this. Please some advise from this site as well.

It depends on where you are. In Andalucía, provided the inheritance is not overly large, e.g. less than 120k, for spouses, inheritance is of only one half of the property (if in joint ownership because the spouse already owns half of it anyway) and the spouse may well find that it is almost tax-free.

Google IHT in Andalucía.

Actually I checked it out with our Spanish solicitors yesterday. And yes what you say is right. And it seems it will not be if any or very much expense for us. But we have had previous dealings with this company. They won our court case when we thought we lost all before. We came from hell and back with them before. So I will trust them. He is Spanish but studied in UK as well and has British wife. So going to use him to guide us through.. Along with forum advise as well.

Here in Murcia your original post is correct. 16k & pay on everything over.
There is an EU investigation going on about it all as they consider that it is incompatible with EU regs that different areas of the same country can have different IHT rates. Many Spanish nationals have made specific complaints.
