How is my visa validated?

Does anyone know the process for getting a long-term spousal visa validated upon arrival in France? I've just received mine and it begins on the 20th, my original departure date. Now, I want to leave earlier, like the 14th, b/c flights are much cheaper. Will my visa be validated upon arrival or do I have to go to the prefecture to have it validated? Will they allow me to enter the country on a tourist visa on the 14th and then go to England and come back later?

Thanks a lot!

Best thing to do is to fly into London first and then travel to France on or after the 20th. This way there is no misunderstanding over when you arrived. Be sure to ask for a stamp next to your visa when you enter France - your passport will be checked.
Anyone come in recently on a long-term visa? Can you share the process with us? Thanks!
