Hip Replacement Surgery

The bones are creaking and one hip is particularly bad. I'd like to stave off surgery as long as possible but ...

Has anyone had hip replacement surgery in France? Would you recommend having it done in the UK before moving or hanging on for treatment in France?

Hi,
Assuming that you will be a UK state pensioner with access to the french health system at the UK's expense via S1, I thoroughly recommend waiting till you are established here before having the op.
I had mine done 2 months ago in the Libourne clinic and it was very satisfactory. Although some of the extras (private room television, telephone and surgeons extra fee) were covered in my case by a "top-up" insurance, they would only have come to about 650€ if I had had to pay them myself. The total cost , the great part of which was met by the state system was just under 10000€.

Thank you very much for the information. Unfortunately, I'm one of those who won't be a UK state pensioner for several more years due to the changing legislation so it sounds as if I'll either have to have the op before moving or pay for the whole thing myself (with insurance) after I'm in France.

Am I right in assuming you were satisfied with the treatment you received? My nearest UK hospital is not somewhere I'd want to be operated in. There's a better one nearly 50 miles away and they say they have you in and out in 4 days.

Hi,
I was very satisfied with the treatment at Libourne Clinic, the staff are all friendly and have time for you. The response to a call on the button at night got was almost instant; the facilities ,private room @ 53.88 € per night was large and had a small balconey, TV 3.50€ per day, the food was variable but I imagine would compare well with the UK (I've never been in a UK hospital). I was in for 6 nights.
There is a site "Hip replacement in France" which I think , does a package including the op for UK residents, you might find it interesting for comparison if going private.

Thanks. I'll check out the site.

I had 5 nights in our local hospital in February and came out lighter than when I went in - awful food. Another reason for considering somewhere else for treatment.

I once thought that it was impossible to get a bad meal in France. Then I was hospitalized for appendicitis. When I was able to eat again, I proved my old belief oh, so wrong.

Hospital food in France is worse than awful. It's possible that it seems worse by comparison with what you can get to eat in the humblest diner here, but do not even think of having your hip replacement here "for the food."

I have an American friend who has had a couple of hip replacements - not sure if both were here, or only the second one. She's a complainer by nature, but one thing she has real problems with here is that the doctors are not generally very forthcoming with information (especially if there are problems or complications). She has had plenty of complications (not only with the hip replacements - her state of health is kind of strange), but you do really need to be prepared to ask very specific questions of your doctors and to pester them if necessary with follow up questions if you really want answers.

Very interesting, Bev. My health is a little complex, too, so I appreciate the comments. In the UK I find I have to take a lot of responsibility for ensuring I receive the right treatment. I'm fortunate to have a GP at the moment who listens and we work together on solutions. There's a lot we need to find out about the French health system before we make our move. It's probably higher on our list of concerns than anything else.

Hi,
When reading opinions about french hospitals , I think it would be wise to remember there are thousands of establishments all with their own strong and weak points . Posters will normally have experience of one or two , and can only, like me, cite their personal experiences .
There are several websites which rate all french hospitals and clinics under various headings .

Fair point. As with all these things, do your homework thoroughly. What's not so good for one person can be acceptable for another.
