I live in the UK with my other half & son & will be moving to Texas next month on a DV visa.Found loads of useful info on the forum already but still have a few questions to ask. Nice to meet you Twostep. I'll be in Houston for starters as I've got a relative there We can stay with for a few weeks. Hopefully my partner can get a job real soon & that will determine if we will be renting in Houston or someplace else. How easy is it for a new immigrant to rent?
I am pregnant so a bit apprehensive about giving birth in the US cos of
insurance & I have heard there is a lot of medical intervention with having a baby over there rather than here in the UK. Because it's diversity visa we have 6 months within which to relocate, My due date is 2 weeks before the visa deadline & obviously don't want to be travelling with a 2 week old baby is why we are not having the baby here. Fingers crossed all goes well with the move & with the birth. Sorry if I was rambling a bit & thanks reading. Regards

Renting is a different ball game in the US. You will find that Houston has a lot of options to pick from, kitchens are generally furnished, closets are built in. You will have to pay deposit for apartment and probably utilities. Your first priority should be getting your social security cards if you have not requested them with the green card then drivers licenses. A must!
The baby will be fine! You will find Americans to be extremely kid friendly.

He works as a network analyst ,he's worked other roles in Telecoms industry in the past. Of course we understand that with a move it often takes a while to get the perfect job. I read somewhere that one has to wait about 10 days after entry to apply for the SSN , is this correct? It's definitely our first priority on getting there to get the SSN & drivers license. I'm quite looking forward to the built in closets, we don't get that often in the UK. I'll keep in touch. Regards.
Give it two weeks to apply for your SS#. It takes that long for your information to work through the system. Google "DMV Texas" which will give you the site with all the details you need to know.Thanks Twostep.
