I am over 65 years old - living in the US - and plan to retire in Thailand. I've read that getting health insurance options can be difficult to attain at that age.

What would be my options - getting a health insurance from a large insurance provider abroad or within a health insurance provider in Thailand and what would the approx. cost ranges be?

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

There are a lot of options. You can go through large agencies but they usually want large premiums. Healthcare in Thailand is inexpensive as compared to the US. The best bet is to go through a local broker and they can get your information and give you a few premium option coverages to choose from. They can range from $2k a yr and up. I can put you in touch with a couple if you’re interested.
They communicate through either Line or WhatsApp

Many carriers in Thailand won't write policies for anyone over 65 or sometimes 60. If they do, the premiums will go up quickly because there isn't much of a risk pool for the older age group in Thailand. And then they will have an eventual cut-off date that could be 80, for instance.

While medical services in Thailand are indeed cheaper than the US, they are not negligible. We used St. Louis, BNC, and Chulalongkorn in Bangkok including for some operations, all of which provided good service. Outside of Bangkok the quality of hospitals falls off quickly. We found prices to be 40% to 50% of retail US costs, but in the US most people have insurance so they don't pay the retail rates.

That's the problem with retiring to Thailand. We moved to France last year after living in Bangkok for the first 13 years of retirement.
