Whilst we await our collective fates re Brexit, there are a lot of people who are quite rightly dotting the i´s and crossing the t´s to mitigate any fallout after we leave EU.

To this end I have been following a thread on a local forum about a UK worker who is currently employed but does not work year round. He is able to live in Spain with his family for 4-5 months per year whilst his family live in Spain full time.

He now wants to get so called residencia and has been told by HMRC that he can get an S1 as he is still paying NIC in UK. He claims that he needs to complete form CA8454

https://www.gov.uk/government/publi...re-cover-in-the-european-economic-area-ca8454

Is this a viable alternative to obtaining health care to satisfy the entry on the extranjeros register?

Yes, a lot of people who wprk in the UK & therefore pay NI, while supporting a family in Spain have S1s for healthcare, for the whole family.

The S1 does of course satisfy healthcare requirements

However, the S1 is, of course, an EU document accepted across the EU.

Once the UK leaves the EU, the S1 form may have to be rescinded or may not be accepted as it's been issued by a non-EU country.

Who knows.
